At it’s heart, email marketing is a ‘conversation’ between two people – you and the recipient receiving the message. The fact that you’ve sent it to 1,000 people at the same time is largely irrelevant because it’s an individual that opens the email, reads and (hopefully) digests the content and takes action.

If you don’t speak to the individual then you can’t hope to make progress with your email marketing campaigns. It was with this in mind that the presentation at the Dorset Women go Digital conference was created.

Every email marketing campaign has a similar 4 step process:

  1. Gather the names and addresses of people who are interested in the things your business does. This is usually a list of customers, but could equally be anyone relevant. Every business has unique groups they could speak to;
  2. Create a list of people who will receive the message from your mailing list. This is usually a group or a segment of an existing list. The reason we do this is because not everyone on our mailing list will be interested in the same things;
  3. Send regular messages that ‘speak’ to that specific group;
  4. Measure the results, rinse and repeat. It’s only by measuring the results that we can determine what people want to find out more about, what they like and won’t they don’t.

1. The Cover Image:

The cover image for a Facebook page is 851 x 274 pixels and is shown in landscape mode. You can include images of you, your products, your brand or logo or anything else that is pertinent which complies with the terms of service Facebook have introduced.

There is a ‘mobile safe’ area of 563 x 175 pixels which sits in the centre of the image. This means if there is something you want to make sure is consistent on all devices the majority of the images need to be centred in this area.

2. The Profile Image:

Your page also requires a Profile Image which is 168 x 168 pixels square. This can be a cut down version of your logo, an alternative version of your logo, something that reflects part of your business or even a photograph. The requirement though is that it’s square and easy to read.

3.  Test First Post Image:

There is a lot of evidence to show that posts which contain pictures and photographs get more engagement than those which don’t. One of my favourite types of post is a quotation and you can easily create an image for one. I’ve varied this theme by making a poster style image that will resonate with the target audience of the Hysterectomy Association.

A mentor, as we’ve already discussed in past posts, can come in many shapes and guises.  They may be the manager who guides a protégés career, they could be the friend who happens to have relevant experience or they could be the person you meet randomly in the street, the presenter who happens to hit the mark with something they say or any one of a number of other encounters – either long or short – that have an impact on a persons life.

For me, the thing that characterises a mentor, is the ability for one person to help another change something fundamental about their life – be it personal or professional.  As such, we may encounter many people who fulfil this role, who are never aware that this is what they are doing.

I had one such encounter a couple of weeks ago at a networking event I attended.  The presenter was talking about being a ‘lighthouse’, a beacon that could guide others and as she was talking, I had a kind of epiphany that made me realise the things that are important in life, and those that aren’t.  I didn’t speak with the presenter afterwards, but I did leave to have coffee with a friend who reinforced what had just happened, by saying the very same things, in exactly the same order as the presenter I had just listened too.  Spooky, just doesn’t cut it.  This was a message I was meant to hear.

And that’s the essence of a mentoring relationship for me, those important messages which are transferred between the participants, between mentor and mentee that lead to significant developments taking place.  On that particular day, I was fortunate enough to have two mentors, neither of whom knew each other and neither of whom would recognise that they were taking that role on, albeit for such a short period of time.

Imagine then, if such a simple encounter can have that profound an effect, what a long term specific mentoring relationship can do … the possibilities are endless, and the opportunities are great.  If you have the chance to work with a mentor, then I would urge you to do so because you certainly won’t regret it, and you will almost certainly be challenged by it.

We all understand the law of diminishing returns. Especially when it comes to business. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but too many businesses spend too much time chasing what appears to be an ever decreasing pot of clients using a hope marketing strategy; that is that they hope they’ll find some business. And yet, just as the internet is offering up a whole load of competition for your business, it’s also the home of an increasing number of potential clients, as more companies and businesses are looking for alternative suppliers to fulfil their needs. It’s just that you don’t know who they are, and they don’t know anything about you either … yet!

The reason most businesses struggle is because they don’t have a strategy for their marketing, they don’t know who their customers are; they often don’t know why their clients buy from them and they don’t know what makes people sit up and pay attention. They know that marketing themselves online is a good thing to do, but they don’t know how to go about it in a way that a. makes sense for their business and b. doesn’t eat up all their time.

In short they’re stuck. Their potential clients have more opportunities than ever to give their business to an increasing number of hungry competitors. So, wouldn’t it be great if you had the inside track, the skills, the knowledge AND expertise to turn the world’s biggest and best professional social network into an effective lead generation tool?

I know the feeling well. Back in 2008 I was also running my other business which works with both consumer and corporate clients. I too used hope marketing as my main marketing tool, hoping people would literally trip over me and want to do business. When I discovered the simple processes I now use online and put them into practice, my turnover literally quadrupled overnight, and it’s a strategy that been growing that business ever since. It’s brilliant for building your brand, getting more people and companies to know who you are, what your business does and how well it does it. And it’s THE place to stand out as the ‘go to’ expert for your market sector.

But, in order to use it effectively and get all these great benefits you do need to know what works, what doesn’t and why. And you really need to know what it is that gives conversion rates as high as 30%.

LinkedIn Made Easy is a great starting place; although the front end of the site changes, the basic principles of networking online never do. It talks you through the various sections of the network and how to use them; and then gives you a set of handy ‘recipes’ for success you can tailor to your own unique needs.

    Over the years many people have asked why our business is called Internet Mentor. It’s a question that’s not necessarily easily answered given what we do. So, I thought I’d share with you where the word ‘mentor’ came from in the hope that this explains why we do what we do in the way we do it.

    The word MENTOR comes from Homer’s Odyssey.  Odysseus, king of Ithaca, goes to fight in the Trojan War and while he is away he leaves the care of his household, especially his son Telemachus to Mentor, who already serves as a teacher and overseer.  After the war, Odysseus is condemned to wander for ten years as he tries to return to his home.

    Telemachus grows up and goes off in search of his father and he is accompanied by the Goddess of War, Athena, who assumes the guise of Mentor Eventually Odysseus and Telemachus are reunited and are able to remove the threat to his Kingdom.

    Over time, the name Mentor has evolved into the concept of a wise and trusted advisor/teacher that we have today.

    The aim of Internet Mentor Limited is to be true to our core values of enabling people and companies to be the best they can be online. Our aim is to share knowledge, skills and expertise that help people and businesses grow sustainably.
